South Korea cautions of developing Russia-North Korea ties

The President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, has expressed his apprehension regarding the increasing military collaboration between Russia and North Korea. He has deemed it “illegal and unjust” due to its violation of UN Security Council resolutions and international sanctions. This development follows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s visit to Russia, where he held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on expanding military co-operation. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has prompted Moscow to seek support from its allies, including North Korea, which possesses a significant arsenal of artillery compatible with Russian systems. However, North Korea is subject to a UN arms embargo that prohibits the export or import of weapons. President Yoon Suk Yeol conveyed his views in written responses to questions from the Associated Press before his departure to attend the UN General Assembly in New York. The meeting between Kim Jong-un and Putin also included talks on expanding co-operation beyond defence into other sectors.
