UAE minister calls for enhanced co-operation in Middle East to build sustainable tourism

Emirates is committed to supporting global initiatives aimed at shaping the future of the tourism sector, according to the Minister of Economy of the UAE, Abdulla bin Touq. He emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation among Middle Eastern countries to establish a sustainable and innovative tourism industry that can contribute to long-term economic growth. Bin Touq, who also serves as the head of Emirates Tourism Council, suggested that achieving this goal requires the launch of innovative projects that align with the unique identities of each country in the region. He highlighted the Middle East’s distinct tourism advantages and elements that position it as a significant player in the global tourism landscape, attracting visitors from around the world. Bin Touq called for increased collaboration among Middle Eastern nations to redefine tourism goals and policies, with the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) playing a more active role in supporting these efforts through training, marketing, and financing. Bin Touq is leading a UAE delegation to the 25th edition of the UNWTO general assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from October 16 to 20. He expressed the UAE’s eagerness to support global endeavors aimed at shaping the future of the tourism sector and advocated for more effective mechanisms to enhance global tourist movement and provide unique experiences. Bin Touq also emphasized the need for greater involvement of the private sector in launching innovative technology-driven tourism services. According to a report released by the UNWTO in July, global tourism has experienced an 84% recovery from pre-pandemic levels, with 700 million international tourists traveling between January and July 2023, representing a 43% year-on-year growth. During the same period, the Middle East region witnessed a 20% increase in arrivals, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
