The Correctional and Rehabilitation Policies Committee of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, formed under Law No. 4 of 2024 regarding the organization of correctional and rehabilitation centers in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, discussed many development projects related to penalties and alternative measures to imprisonment, and re-engineering the procedures of correctional and rehabilitation centers related to… Judicial processes, as well as reviewing proposals on best practices applied in correctional and rehabilitation centers at the international level.
This came during its first meeting chaired by His Excellency Counselor Yousef Saeed Al Abri, Undersecretary of the Judicial Department, who stressed the Judicial Department’s interest in developing a comprehensive system for managing correctional and rehabilitation centers in accordance with the highest internationally approved standards, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the State, Deputy Prime Minister, Head of the Presidential Court, and Head of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, to achieve leadership in the judicial system, in a way that supports the consolidation of the competitive position of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
He said that the Correctional and Rehabilitation Policies Committee is responsible for proposing appropriate measures and mechanisms to develop correctional and rehabilitation centres, to ensure the fulfillment of its mission of reforming convicts, rehabilitating them and reintegrating them into good members of society, as well as proposing the necessary mechanisms to reduce custodial sentences and expand punitive alternatives.
Al-Abri explained that the committee is working to adopt a plan, policy and work guide for correctional and rehabilitation centres, ensuring that they are linked to the work plan of the courts and prosecutions in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in addition to proposing draft laws aimed at expanding the application of alternative measures to imprisonment for minor crimes, such as requiring convicts to perform… One of the works of community service, which achieves the desired goals of reform and refinement.
