Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport showcases future of air mobility

During a session entitled “The Future of Air Mobility” as part of the proceedings of the third edition of the Dubai Congress for Self-Driving Transport, Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports, expounded on the pivotal role that air mobility plays in the transportation of people, goods, and various shipments, and its reputation for safe and efficient methodologies. Air mobility is made possible through the utilization of advanced technologies based on systematic plans that have been approved after numerous scientific experiments conducted by companies. These experiments have highlighted several factors and challenges that must be addressed to ensure the provision of secure air mobility for all.

According to Walker, the major challenges encountered in air mobility are weather conditions, such as winds and sandstorms. Strategies have been formulated based on data and insights gained from past experiences to enhance and evolve air mobility means to achieve various objectives. These objectives include delivering superior operational efficiency and offering benefits to passengers, such as record transit times to intended destinations, along with stringent safety measures.

During the session, Mr. Walker commended Dubai as an exceptional global model in air travel and sports. He attributed Dubai’s high standing to its modern infrastructure, top-tier airports, and unwavering support from the Dubai Government.

Mr. Walker commented on the Aerial Taxi project, which is set to begin operations in 2026. He described it as an exemplary project on the horizon, which will travel a maximum distance of 241 km and cruise at speeds of up to 300 km per hour.

Mr. Walker stated that the success of the Aerial Taxi in Dubai is underpinned by key factors, including the construction of ultra-modern vertiports at premier locations across the emirate, such as the Dubai International Airport, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, and Downtown. Other factors include government support and coordination, robust regulatory measures, and strong demand for the service. The rollout of the Aerial Taxi is projected to reduce travel time from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah from 46 minutes to a mere 6 minutes.

In conclusion, Mr. Walker emphasized that the Aerial Taxi project, along with other air endeavors in Dubai, is poised to catapult the emirate to the forefront of global cities advancing air mobility.
