ABU DHABI, September 3, 2023 (WAM) – Francesco La Camera, the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), has highlighted the agency’s readiness to participate in the Africa Climate Week (ACW) 2023. The event is scheduled to take place from September 4-8, 2023, in Nairobi and will be hosted by the government of Kenya.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), La Camera expressed IRENA’s commitment to launching various high-quality initiatives and agreements aimed at accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources in Africa. These efforts are intended to address climate challenges in collaboration with participating countries, including the United States, Europe, and several African nations. He also acknowledged the UAE’s eagerness to contribute to similar initiatives.
The Director-General of IRENA emphasized the need for Africa to intensify its efforts and assume a leading role as the “new continent” in accelerating the transition to renewable energy. This approach will enable Africa to effectively confront climate challenges and enhance the diversification of its renewable energy sources.
La Camera further stated that ACW 2023 is an essential component of international endeavors leading up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28), which will be hosted by the UAE in November. He underscored the significance of ACW 2023 as a platform for discussions on intensifying efforts to transition towards renewable energy
