The Sevens Stadium is preparing for a busy month of October, as it plays host to a variety of family-friendly festivals and world-class sporting events. In anticipation of the Emirates Dubai 7s, the stadium will be the venue for significant matches on the sporting calendar, including both local and international tournaments. Additionally, an all-day music festival will take place, combining sports and entertainment for the enjoyment of the entire family.
Mathew Tait, the General Manager and Festival Director of Emirates Dubai 7s and the Stadium, expressed his excitement for the upcoming events. He emphasized the stadium’s status as one of the region’s largest sport and entertainment venues, and its pride in utilizing its exceptional facilities and infrastructure in Dubai to host international tournaments like the WXV. This allows for a closer connection between the sport and the local community. Tait eagerly looks forward to welcoming sports fans and music enthusiasts throughout the month.
One of the highlights of the month is the Youth Sports Festival, which will be held at the Sevens Stadium for the third consecutive year. This festival brings together young rugby, cricket, and netball players, who will compete to determine the top teams that will participate in the finals at the Emirates Dubai 7s in December.
The festival will commence with the first tournament on October 13th, followed by the next round on October 21st. This event provides aspiring athletes with the opportunity to refine their skills in their chosen sport and celebrate their passion for the games, all within the prestigious backdrop of an internationally renowned stadium. Since its inception in 2021, over 1,400 children from across the UAE have participated in this multi-sport competition. For the first time, the United Arab Emirates Rugby Federation (UAERF) introduced Under 16 Girls rugby, both contact and tackle, creating more opportunities for young women to play competitively and taking the total tournament up to 384 players and 32 teams.
The netball tournament will see 240 players split into 24 teams and three age groups: Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 while the cricket tournament compromises 12 teams and 144 players aged Under 13 and Under 15.
Women’s XV Tournament
With the tournament underway until October 28th, the Sevens Stadium is hosting the international Women’s XV3 Tournament, featuring teams from Colombia, Fiji, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Kenya and Spain as they battle it out on their journey to the top.
A not-to-be-missed tournament for rugby lovers, the tournament will see the Group winner promoted to group 2, while the fate of the bottom team will be decided by a play-off with the next best side, according to the World Rugby Women’s Rankings.
The WXV3 is part of World Rugby’s new three-tier annual global women’s international 15s competition that aims to create a meaningful pathway for all unions to the Rugby World Cup in 2025 with the five top ranked non-qualified teams at the end of WXV 2024 qualifying for the tournament – a nail-biting moment.
