More than 130 countries and international organizations are expected to participate in the important discussions regarding China’s ambitious global trade policy. On October 17, 2023, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, arrived in Beijing to lead a delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the high-level talks commemorating the 10th anniversary of China’s flagship belt and road strategy. Sheikh Saud is representing President Sheikh Mohamed at the third Belt and Road Forum for International Co-operation, which commences on Tuesday. Accompanying him at the two-day international summit are several senior Emirati ministers and officials, including Dr Sultan Al Jaber, the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Cop28 President-designate; Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi, the Minister of Culture and Youth; Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi, the Minister of State for Foreign Trade; Ahmad Al Falasi, the Minister of Education; and Hussain Al Hammadi, the UAE Ambassador to China. The gathering will bring together representatives from over 130 countries and various international organizations to discuss a wide range of topics, such as green development, connectivity, and the digital economy. Throughout the event, multiple forums will be held with a focus on strengthening trade connections, promoting intercultural exchange, and enhancing maritime cooperation. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s signature policy combines a land-based “economic belt” and a “maritime silk road” to establish connections between China and Southeast, South and Central Asia, the Arabian Gulf, North Africa, and Europe.The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is poised to assume a pivotal role in the advancement of the global infrastructure initiative. In the year 2019, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, made an announcement regarding the establishment of agreements worth $3.4 billion (Dh12.49bn) between the Emirates and China, with the objective of fortifying economic relations between the two nations. It was revealed that China would allocate $2.4 billion towards the creation of a storage and shipping facility spanning an area of 5.57 million square meters in Jebel Ali, intended for the exportation of Chinese goods worldwide. Additionally, Sheikh Mohammed disclosed that an additional $1 billion would be invested in the establishment of a significant food project in Dubai, encompassing the importation, processing, and packaging of agricultural, fishery, and animal products for global exportation. The current forum endeavors to reinforce international partnerships and address urgent global challenges, including climate change, poverty, and healthcare. It is anticipated that a series of trade agreements will be ratified among participating nations throughout the course of this event.
